It can be daunting to smoke from a bong, especially if you are new to it. However, it becomes easier once you get to know how it is done. When smoking with a bong, the first thing to do is fill it up with water and then pack your bowl. Next, light the bowl and fill the chamber with flavorful smoke.
Then, inhale deeply and enjoy the powerful hit. If you are new to smoking from a bong, we recommend that you take inhale slowly until you are more comfortable with pulling off a big drag. Now, let us break down all these in an understandable step-by-step guide for a newbie to the world of bongs.
Step 1: Prepare your Bong
Make sure that your bong is clean and then fill it up with water. You can either use tap or bottled water. You should watch the volume of water you pour into the bong because the size of the bong will determine the level of water you should have in the device.
As a rule of thumb, fill up the water to a little above the tip of the downstem. The downstem is the long tube that sticks inside the bong. If you pour more water than necessary, it may splash and mess up your smoking experience. Make sure you pour the water directly into the bong mouthpiece when filling it up.
Step 2: Prepare your Weed
Using your fingers, a grinder, or a pair of scissors, grind up your weed to almost fine. A grinder is most recommended because it will give the texture that you want. In the absence of it, make do with what you have and use your fingers or a pair of scissors.
Step 3: Pack the Weed into the Bong Bowl
Pick out the bowl and pack your weed into the bowl. The bowl is the funnel-shaped device in the outer part of the downstem. It is recommended that you pack some large chunks of weed into the bowl first and then put the ground weed.
This is to prevent the grounded weed from getting sucked in the bowl as you smoke. Make sure you do not pack the weed too tightly so air can easily pass through. If you are smoking alone, only pack the bowl half full. If you want, you can refill it after the first drag.
Step 4: Hold the Bong in one Hand
Carefully hold the smoke chamber, which is the long part that connects the water chamber and the mouthpiece. You can also hold the device by the bottom. We recommend that you sit in a comfortable position with a stand or table where you can put the bong if you start coughing.
Step 5: Breath through your Diaphragm

Step 8: Inhale the Smoke into Your Lungs
When you are satisfied with the level of smoke that has pooled in the chamber, pull the bowl out of the stem with the hand you used in lighting the bowl and inhale the smoke from the bowl deeply. Inhale deeply so that it goes into your lungs. You can take off your mouth from the mouthpiece if you are unable to inhale the smoke all at once. Make sure you cover the mouthpiece with your palm to prevent the smoke from escaping. You can inhale the rest of the smoke by removing your hand and putting it in your mouth quickly to take a drag.
Step 9: Exhale the Smoke
You should hold the smoke for a few seconds in your lungs before exhaling. Now, you must not hold the smoke in for too long as it can affect your health. Holding it in for two to three seconds is enough to get high. You may want to blow the smoke outside the window if you do not want your room filled with cannabis smoke.
If you do not mind, you can go ahead and blow it into the room. When you are done inhaling and exhaling all the smoke, replace the bowl in the stem and relax. When you are feeling up to it, take the bowl out of the bong and pour out the water. Rinse the bong thoroughly and keep it somewhere safe until your next use.
