The Memsie Stakes is a Group 1 race run over 1400m at Caulfield racecourse. It is run under Weight For Age conditions and is the first Group 1 race of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The race features a number of high-profile gallopers who use the race as their first-up run for the Spring.
The 2022 Memsie Stakes will be run on Saturday 27th August with total prizemoney of $1,000,000.
Memsie Stakes History
Dating back to 1899 the Memsie Stakes is rich in history; The race has a well-earned reputation as a “Spring Shaping” race with horses that run well in the Memsie Stakes earmarked for a successful Spring Racing Carnival. In recent years, MAKYBE DIVA, HUMIDOR and SUNLINE have all won the race prior to going on to claim a bigger prize during the spring.
Memsie Stakes Past Winners
Multiple wins in the Memsie Stakes are not unusual. There have been three horses that have recorded back-to-back wins in the Memsie Stakes this century, BEHEMOTH (2020-21), DISSIDENT (2013-14) and SUNLINE (2000-2001). LORD (1958 – 61) won this race four times in a row, while AJAX saluted three times (1938-40).
Mares have a good record in the race with ATLANTIC JEWEL, KING’S ROSE, MISS FINLAND, MAKYBE DIVA, MAGICAL MISS, SUNLINE and DANE RIPPER all saluting since 1998.
Placing A Bet On The Memsie Stakes
The Memsie Stakes is a tough race for punters. The 1400m distance can attract a field of sprinters stepping up to their maximum distance range as well as star stayers who are resuming for the feature races later in the Spring. Can the sprinters run out a strong 1400m? How far advanced in their fitness are the resuming stayers? All of these factors must be considered before placing a bet on the Memsie Stakes betting odds.
Horses that run well in the PB Lawrence at Caulfield two weeks prior tend to run well in the Memsie Stakes and that is the best lead-up race. Well-backed runners have fared well in recent years, with HUMIDOR ($21 in 2018) the only upset result in the last seven years.
Horses drawn well have dominated the Memsie Stakes with only one winner having jumped from a double-digit barrier since 2004, that was King’s Rose (gate 11 in 2011). First-up and Second-up Horses have accounted for 26 of the past 32 victories in the Memsie Stakes. The last seven winners of the race have been male horses aged 5yo and older.
In summary, quality gallopers who are 5yo or older and are having their first of the second run for the prep have outstanding recent records in the Memsie Stakes. With more than one horse fitting those criteria each year, the challenge for bettors is to pick the right horse!
